Hardwood Decking

About our Hardwoods

The appeal of hardwoods lies in their naturally rich, deep colors that weather over time to develop a beautiful warmth and character. Hardwoods are naturally resistant to fungal growth and offer naturally superior levels of durability and wear resistance, without any additional chemical treatment, making hardwoods the ideal material for use in the construction of decking and outdoor furniture and structures. With only nominal care and maintenance with treatment oils and finishes such as Textrol and Seasonite, they retain their natural beauty year after year.

There are a number of species to choose from and we have ipe, Massaranduba, Tatajuba and yellow balau. Depending on the final design and application of your decking, we can recommend the right species of timber for you.

Hard woods - Yellow Balau

Yellow Balau is a hardwood that is often used in the manufacture of outdoor furniture and is also used in decking. The appeal of Yellow Balau is its high density and durability. It is also fine grained, heavy and robust and has an interlocking grain and a fine and even texture. The timber has a life span of about 20-30 years. In comparison to other species, Yellow Balau has only a small tendency of warping or twisting and it is therefore adaptable to changing weather conditions, ideal for outdoor use.

The grain of this hardwood is interlocked and the texture is classed as medium, luster is moderate or lacking depending on the species, the wood has a characteristic odor. Ipe is well known for its strength and is thought be the one of the hardest woods in the world (strength is three times harder than oak) and is highly resistant against fungi and termites and other pests.

Hardwoods - Massaranduba

Massaranduba is an extremely strong, versatile and durable timber with qualities comparable to Ipe. Massaranduba hardwoods have been extensively used in heavy construction and also used in marine work, this wood is also ideal for flooring and decking. Due to the timbers straight grain and fine texture, when correctly prepared and maintained it is possible to produce a fine finish which has allowed this wood also to be used for a variety of applications, including furniture components. The timber is naturally durable and is very resistant to decay and termites.

Tatajuba is a hard wood with straight, interlocked or irregular grain and coarse texture. This species is widely used in flooring, decks, furniture, boats, canoes, columns and beams.
