Eastern White white cedar is ideal for exterior construction because it is naturally durable and resistant to moisture, decay and insect damage
There are examples all over the world of white cedar shingles lasting well over 100 years. With its richness of grain, texture and colour, white cedar offers a timeless complement to any architectural style, from traditional to contemporary.
For the energy-wise, white cedar has a unique cell structure that traps tiny pockets of air to boost insulation and reduce home heating costs.
Northern white cedar is popular with craftsmen because it can be easily worked by hand or with power tools. It also has exceptional dimensional stability. It lays flat, stays straight and retains fasteners. It has an even grain, fine texture and the lowest density of any commercial domestic wood.
Rustic Grade ('C' 2nd Clear) is an economy grade Eastern White Cedar shingle that can be used for cladding exterior walls or roofs on secondary structures or garden buildings. This rustic product has some sound knots on the exposed face of the shingle.
Our Eastern White Cedar shingles are cut with stellite-tipped saws to ensure precise cuts and minimise raised grain.
They are then resquared and rebutted. Resquared means that they are cut parallel which saves time on installation as it eliminates the need for trimming. Rebutted means they are trimmed at the butt to provide smoother, smarter ends and create an impeccable final finish. They are then kiln-dried for greater stability and durability.
Eastern white cedar shingles age well. If left in their natural unfinished state they will take on a distinctive silver grey appearance. They have a good adhesion capacity for finish and stain, so different architectural effects can be achieved by applying a suitable exterior wood finish such as Cabot SPF.
Eastern White Cedar has a fine even grain and is appreciated for its good woodworking qualities. It ages and dries without contracting and nails can be easily driven through it without it splitting.

-2.28 m2 on roofs with a pitch of 22 degrees or more
-1.73 m2 on roofs with a 18 - 22 degree pitch
-3.47 m2 on vertical cladding
For double starter course on roofs and walls add 1 bundle for every 18 linear metres.
Recommended Exposure
-125mm on roofs with a pitch of 22 degrees or more
-95mm on roofs with a 18 - 22 degree pitch
-190mm on vertical cladding*

Fixing
It is important to choose the right nail for the job. Stainless steel annular ring shank nails will help maximise the life and appearance of your shingles. As a guide, one kilo of 1.8 x 31mm nails will fix approximately 4 bundles of shingles. Use two nails per shingle regardless of width and nail 20mm from each edge and 40mm above the butt line of the overlapping shingle.
